For our middle school students, Identity’s Alternative Spring Break 2026 was a unique opportunity to see themselves as successful college students and scientists. Identity partnered with Montgomery College (MC) to offer a hands-on STEM experience designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and help middle school students begin envisioning themselves in college and STEM careers. For the fourth year in a row, over three days at MC’s Germantown campus, Identity youth immersed themselves in interactive science, engineering, math and technology activities led by experienced college faculty.

Students rotated through STEM labs and workshops that emphasized experimentation, problem-solving, and teamwork, from robotics and engineering challenges to biology labs with hands-on activities that introduced them to real-world health and science careers. In addition to academic learning, the program helped students build a comfort level with college, helping them see that higher education is within their reach.
The experience concluded with a showcase and family gathering, where students shared what they learned and families connected with Montgomery College staff to learn more about STEM pathways, college supports, and future opportunities. “By engaging both youth and their parents, our Alternative Spring Break improves academic curiosity and confidence while encouraging long-term thinking about college and career possibilities,” reflected Nora Morales, Program Director, Identity. And they did. The six students who spoke during the showcase talked about how much they enjoyed everything about they experience – the activities, the generous and knowledgeable professors and even eating lunch in the cafeteria. They said they wanted to come back when they were old enough to be college students at MC.

Programs like this reflect Identity’s ongoing commitment to exposing young people to eye-opening experiences and opportunities that expand their horizons and build a bridge to higher education. We are proud to partner with Montgomery College to help promising young people realize their full potential.
