As a long-time partner of the University of Maryland School of Public Health, we at Identity know the life-changing benefits of this collaboration. Now the University of Maryland is being recognized nationally for building partnerships like ours that benefit both students and communities.
The University of Maryland has earned the 2026 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, one of the nation’s highest recognitions of institutional excellence in community-engaged teaching, research and service. We especially congratulate Dr. Amy Lewin and Dr. Kevin Roy who have lead evaluation on projects such as Identity’s non-clinical emotional support groups, the Promise of Latino Youth needs assessment, and the 2025-2026 Pulse Poll.
“Our collaboration with Identity has been the privilege of my career” Dr. Lewin says. “Over the last ten years my colleagues, students, and I have worked to support the life-changing services that Identity provides. I have been endlessly moved by the passion, dedication, skill, generosity, and effectiveness of Identity staff. Identity's commitment to the community - listening, serving, and advocating for all, including those whose voices have long been unheard - has been an inspiration. I am proud and honored to contribute to their work and their vision.”
Identity collaborates with the University of Maryland School of Public Health on the evaluation of multiple projects, including a mixed-methods study of our Encuentros/Gatherings non-clinical emotional support groups and a monthly Community Pulse Survey. And in our process of continuous improvement, we partner with them to re-validate our evaluation scales and update baseline survey questions.

Associate Provost Tania Mitchell wrote, “As we look ahead, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue this work and are hopeful for deeper connections with Identity. Our continued collaboration remains essential as we move forward together.”
The Elective Classification for Community Engagement is a multi-year recognition from the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
